Balloon Sinuplasty
What is Balloon Sinuplasty?
In-Office Balloon Sinuplasty (IOBSP) is a minimally invasive surgical option used to treat sinus disease that is unresponsive to medical treatments. During the procedure, a small balloon is inserted into the nose and inflated to open the blocked sinus passages. The procedure is both safe and effective, with a fast recovery time. The ultimate goal of any sinus surgery is to enlarge the sinus openings, which can become inflamed and obstructed, causing discomfort and pressure associated with sinus infections. By expanding these passages, blockages that lead to sinus infections can be prevented.
Why is a Balloon Sinuplasty Performed?
Compared to traditional sinus surgery which involves general anesthesia and cutting and removing bone and tissue, balloon sinuplasty is an in-office, less invasive procedure that allows for a quicker recovery period. It is relatively painless and has a lower risk of complications or side effects. Furthermore, it is FDA-approved and considered a safe alternative to endoscopic sinus surgery.
How is a Balloon Sinuplasty Performed?
Usually, the in-office balloon sinuplasty is a quick and simple outpatient procedure. Before inserting a balloon catheter into the sinus cavity, patients receive local anesthesia. Then, the surgeon inflates the balloon, which widens the sinus opening and the nasal passage walls. After flushing out mucus and debris with a saline solution, the catheter is removed. The outcome is unblocked sinuses that allow for normal breathing and mucus drainage. Almost 95 percent of patients have reported noticeable improvement in their sinus symptoms following this procedure.
What Can I Expect After A Balloon Sinuplasty Procedure?
Following your Balloon Sinuplasty procedure, it is normal to experience some fatigue and congestion for up to a week. It is advisable to avoid strenuous activities and blowing your nose for a few days following the procedure. Patients typically go home just a few hours after the surgery, and many are able to resume their normal activities within a couple of days.
